Oscar's TOP TEN FUN DSC FACTS, by SSgt. Oscar C. Moreno
10. Months ahead of a rocket launch or a missile test, telemetry packages are affixed to the rocket or missile body to transmit electrical information about important flight functions. The ARIA is one way of retrieving that critical electrical signal.
9.One of the final chances for real time data reduction, the ARIA DSC section decodes telemetry data into individual components.
8. These components consist of electrical representations of physical phenomena happening miles away, like rocket booster thrust and acceleration.
7. The DSC operator monitors many of these components and alerts ARIA Mission Coordinator of any abnormal data conditions.
6. A few different types of recorders in DSC are available for archiving the many samples of information contained in the telemetry. Hard copies of flight data can be made during a data sampling run.
5. Furthermore, several more information samples can be taken directly to the DSC telemetry processing computer for real time storage or conversion into a "quick look" screen for monitoring critical events like booster separation on a rocket bound for outer space.
4.Another application for the computer in DSC is to apply incoming missile flight data on detailed display screens where a DSC operator may monitor the missile's flight controls, flight instruments and even an artificial horizon. This kind of detailed monitoring comes in handy when chasing a quick and nimble cruise missile that is being tested to its limits.
3. Sometimes, the DSC prepares the telemetry data for retransmission, helping the ARIA to direct the telemetry to a satellite high in earth's orbit, for further retransmission to the range.
2. DSC also sends the telemetry to the ARIA Record Console for storage on magnetic tape.
1. The number one fun fact is that the DSC operator gets to view the best part of ARIA data coverage, which is the actual flight information during a sampling run.
